Aweil is an area which was affected by the slave trade in the 19th century and by civil war in the 20th century. It was the capital of Aweil State, a government area which existed between 2000 and 2020. The town lies in the northwest of South Sudan on the A43. It is approximately 100 km south of the international border with the Republic of Sudan.

The town of Aweil is the capital of Northern Bahr el-Ghazal State and has the status of a municipality and does not belong to any county. Aweil town borders of Aweil Centre, Aweil West and Aweil East Counties.

Aweil East County is a county in South Sudan. The county is located in the eastern part of Northern Bahr el Ghazal state, in northern South Sudan, close to the border with the Republic of Sudan.

Following the outbreak of conflict in Sudan in April 2023, thousands of Sudanese refugees have arrived at a camp near Wedweil town in Aweil West (Radio Tamazuj 2023). These are primarily from the Rizeigat community, though members of the Masalit community from West Darfur State and residents of Nyala are also present at the camp.

The headquarters of Aweil North County is based in Gok Machar town, located in Malual North Payam. Due to the county’s proximity to Sudan, its trade and migration routes leading to the northern border have been impacted by border closures, natural disasters as well as inter-communal violence.
