BMP-1 (Ob'yekt 765Sp2) – The standard production version weighs 13 tonnes. It was built from 1969 to 1973. Vehicles produced from the mid-1970s had a higher hull with more space inside as well as a different shaped nose section which also made it 20 cm longer, giving it an improved swimming capability.

The BMP-1 from the BMP family (which stands for Boyevaya Mashina or literally "Infantry Fighting Vehicle") is certainly one of the most famous IFV worldwide, creating a stir in the West when it appeared.

The BMP-1U was an Ukrainian upgrade of the BMP-1 developed by the State Scientific and Technical Centre of Artillery and Small Arms, located in Kyiv, probably from 1999. The main exercises was to keep the chassis unchanged (but with an overhauled power unit) while replacing the turret by a new domestic one, the KBA-105 Shkval ("squall").

Promoted under the new designation BMP-2+, it has been designed as an affordable BMP-1 upgrade boasting overall combat capabilities comparable to that of the original BMP-2 .
