When people say 'X song is from BMS' they mean it was originally composed for an event called BMS of Fighters. Where several artists publish their songs for the event that takes place every year.

beatoraja is an upcoming BMS player based on Java. It is cross-platform, and supports BMSON. While beatoraja does not have any Internet Ranking yet, ChromaIR is currently being developed with plans to be compatible with beatoraja. LR2 is the standard BMS player, it's over 10 years old and can be quite buggy. It has by far the largest playerbase.
