BN had 2 groups of SD40-2s, one ballasted around 416,000 pounds for coal and manifest units at about 392,000 pounds. Contemporary AC units all are above 400,000 pounds because of the weight of everything included, there is ever less "purposeful ballast" added nowadays, they all come in around 416-425,000 pounds.

Been waiting on more ST SD40-2's, and ST delivered in a big way! The BN SD40-2B is a must have for me, plus I can always use more BN SD40-2's. A couple of the BN roadnumbers appear to have Locotrol radio equipment, which was a 1970's version of DPU control that was in use for a time. Thinking the two roadnumbers are master and a slave units.

BN also had a straight SD40-2 number 7023 that ended up with radiators from an SD45 during repair work. Then there are the two LPG powered units built from SD40-2\'s that were modified with flared radiators and corrugated style grills.

In doing some research of BN SD40-2 6794 I am learning a lot about this EMD I wasn't aware of. It was built in 1977 and wrecked at Seward, NE in 1993. It was rebuilt and renumbered BN 6851 wearing the newer BN pinstripe scheme in 1994. It was relettered BNSF 6851 in 2001 well after the BNSF merger
