BNSF Railway and Vehicle Projects converted a GG20B to an experimental testbed, for the use of hydrogen fuel cells. The new locomotive is designated HH20B. The locomotive was publicly demonstrated for the first time on June 29, 2009, at Topeka, Kansas. [6][7]

After more than two years of on-again, off-again work, the unit, now BNSF HH20B No. 1205, rolled into the sunlight on June 29, 2009.

CP 1704 was among the first of a 35-unit order by Canadian Pacific. CP 1700-1706 were to be constructed in 2005 for testing. From CP Railway press release 3-14-2005. Contract terminated in late 2006.
