Das Fischer- und Ackerbaudorf Bauen liegt im Urnerbecken direkt am Seeufer des Vierwaldstädtersees. Das zu Füssen einer eindrücklichen Bergkulisse liegende Dorf ist die kleinste Gemeinde im Kanton Uri.

Wie wohl an der uralten Landverbindung Stans - Uri gelegen (heute zum Teil Weg der Schweiz), bildete bis vor kurzem der Wasserweg die Hauptverbindung für die Seegemeinde. Bauen entwickelte sich denn auch mit der Eröffnung einer regelmässigen Dampfschiffverbindung im Jahre 1874 zu einem beliebten Ausflugs- und Ferienort.
