The BE-3 (Blue Engine 3) is a liquid hydrogen / liquid oxygen rocket engine developed by Blue Origin. The engine began development in the early 2010s and completed acceptance testing in early 2015.

Be stars are a heterogeneous set of stars with B spectral types and emission lines. A narrower definition, sometimes referred to as classical Be stars , is a non- supergiant B star whose spectrum has, or had at some time, one or more Balmer emission lines .

At full power, BE-3PM generates 110,000 lbf (490 kN) thrust at Launch Site One (109,000 lbf / 485 kN at sea level). When returning to Earth, it uniquely throttles down to 20,000 lbf (90 kN), enabling a gentle vertical landing on the pad. Like the Space Shuttle’s main engines, BE-3PM uses high-performing liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen.

BE-3U is a liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen engine capable of generating 173,000 lbf (770 kN) thrust in vacuum, with throttleability to 120,000 lbf (530 kN). Two restartable BE-3U engines power New Glenn’s upper stage, enabling a wide range of customer missions including direct injection to geostationary orbit.

The Blue Engine-3 (BE-3) is a hydrolox cryogenic combustion tap-off rocket engine developed by Blue Origin. It is the third engine developed by Blue Origin after the BE-1 peroxide-fueled engine and the BE-2 RP-1. A single BE-3 powers the New Shepard Propulsion Module during launch and relights to perform the landing.
