The Big Snowy Mountains (Gros Ventre: níichʔibííkʔa, lit. 'it is never summer' [1]) are a small mountain range south of Lewistown in Fergus County, Montana.

The Big Snowy Mountains rise up from the prairie lands of central Montana around 15 miles south of Lewistown. These mountains are a unique-looking range at the geographical center of the state.

The Big Snowy Mountains Backcountry Drive is a seventy-seven mile route that travels along the eastern and southern base of the Big Snowy Mountains in Central Montana. The route, which follows primarily gravel roads, runs between Lewistown and Judith Gap.

Crystal Lake and the Big Snowy Mountains are part of the Helena – Lewis & Clark National Forest and are one of the “Island” mountain ranges that are scattered in Central Montana. The Big Snowies extend as much as 10 miles north to south and 25 miles east to west.

Jutting out dramatically from the relatively low-lying landscape below, the Big Snowy Mountains are a small chain of rugged peaks located almost perfectly in the geographic center of the US state of Montana. The range contains 45 named mountains, the highest and most prominent of which is Greathouse Peak (8,691ft/2,649m).
