Tant grew up swimming at the Cascade Plunge in East Lake and was a competitive springboard diver while serving with the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division.

He had his own certification since his school predated all other certification agencies that now exist. Bill was the one who started the spear fishing and wreck diving that you now enjoy.

2013年8月2日 · Known by some as Cap'n Scuba and featured in magazines as the Godfather of the Deep, Bill Tant was "the go-to guy for diving who really put diving on the map in the Southeast," Mark Tant said. For years, Bill Tant also operated a lounge next to the dive store, where the chili - dubbed Yucatant chili - was made with Central American spices.

Since opening Southern Skin Divers Supply in 1953, Tant certified thousands of divers and led hundreds of diving trips to the coast. Today, the 5,000-square-foot dive shop remains on 5th Avenue South, where people still train to become accomplished divers.
