Raymond Thayer Birge had been a professor of physics for 45 years (including 22 as department chair) when the new Birge Hall was named in his honor. Designed by John Warnecke, it replaced Bacon Hall (1881), formerly the university's elegant library and art gallery.

The Botany Greenhouse is located in Birge Hall at 430 Lincoln Dr., Madison, WI 53706. Please enter the greenhouse through the front doors of Birge Hall and follow the signs to the B2 level of Birge. Botany Garden hours: sunrise to sundown.

Designed to alleviate the crowding of Science Hall, Birge Hall (then known as the Botany building), opened in August of 1912. A ten story wing was added on the west side in 1956, and the library section on the east in 1980. The building was renamed Birge Hall in 1950.
