The fifth generation of the BMW 5 Series executive cars consists of the BMW E60 (saloon version) and BMW E61 (wagon version, marketed as 'Touring'). The E60/E61 generation was produced by BMW from 2003 to 2010 and is often collectively referred to as the E60.

The fifth generation of BMW 5 Series was introduced in 2004. Known as the E60, the fifth generation of 5 Series were offered as either sedans or station wagons. E60 cars were available with a large number of engine configurations: inline 4, inline 6, V8, and V10.

The top of the line performance variant for the fifth generation of BMW 5 Series was the E60 M5. The E60 M5 was sold worldwide as a sedan, but was offered as a Touring wagon exclusively in Europe. The only M5 to be fitted with a V10 engine, the E60 M5 was fitted with a naturally aspirated 5.0L unit capable of producing 500hp.
