A major advance was the four-valve head Bugatti designed — one of the first of its type ever conceived. Power output with dual Zenith carburetters reached 30 hp (22 kW) at 4500 rpm, more than adequate for the 660-lb (300-kg) car.

The Bugatti Type 22 that followed was based on the Type 13, but with a larger road-going body. It had a 1.4-liter, single overhead camshaft, 4-cylinder engine mounted into a 94.5-inch wheelbase platform.
