As of April 24, 1995, the date of merger between Chicago & North Western and Union Pacific, there were still 97 GP7s and 9 GP9s on the C&NW roster. According to the most recent renumbering plan, the C&NW GP7s will be renumbered into the UP 400-496 series, and the C&NW GP9s will be renumbered into the UP 497-505 series.

It was sold to C&NW in April 1976 and rebuilt at Oelwein in April 1976 as 4514. It was retired on December 12, 1988, and sold to FRVRR as 4514 on January 12, 1989.

The KCS NW2 1102 seen in the first photo went on to become CNW 1008 and they got a lot of use out of her as she survived on their roster into the 80's.

At least one unit, C&NW 1779, was wrongly stenciled during its career as a GP9. C&NW 1776 painted in a red, white, and blue scheme in August 1975 to commemorate the 200th birthday of the United States of America.

The GP9 was available with all of the fuel tank, steam generator, and dynamic brake options as the GP7, including “torpedo tube” air tanks mounted on the roof.

GP9 #4529 at Chadron, NE on 7-8-80. Originally built as 1760, this engine was rebuilt at Oelwein, IA after suffering wreck damage. The long hood on this unit is from AS-616m #1560, giving the 4529 a GP-18 appearance. The 4529 spent its entire post-rebuild career on the Western Division and was retired from the roster on 1-17-91 and sold to VMV.

2021年4月30日 · C&NW sold 30 GP7Rs, GP9s, GP30s, and GP35s to Fox River Valley Railroad in January 1989. See roster for unit numbers. C&NW sold seven SD7Rs and 11 SD9s to Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern on September 5, 1986 (the same day that DM&E took over operation of the 826 miles of former C&NW line between Winona, Minnesota, and Rapid City, South Dakota).

C&NW EMD GP9 1729 built April 1957, received chopped short hood before 1970, rebuilt to C&NW GP9R 4532 July 1978, and seen caboose-light in Cedar Rapids, IA Jan. 18, 1975.
