RodZ, a component of the bacterial core morphogenic apparatus
Here we discover a morphogenic protein, RodZ, which is widely conserved across the bacterial kingdom. In Caulobacter crescentus, RodZ is essential for viability and is involved in all aspects of this organism's complex morphology. Depletion or over-production of RodZ results in grossly misshapen cells with stalk defects.

RodZ: a key-player in cell elongation and cell division in
RodZ is a transmembrane protein and forms a supramolecular complex called the Rod complex with other proteins, such as MreB-actin and peptidoglycan synthesis enzymes (for e.g., PBP2). Deletion of the rodZ gene changes the cell shape from rod to round or ovoid.

In this study, we report that RodZ is involved in determining the site of vegetative cell division and likely helps to block aberrant non-medial cell division. We demonstrate that RodZ directly interacts with MinJ, a member of Min system.
RodZ, a new player in bacterial cell morphogenesis - PMC
2009年2月4日 · Three different laboratories have now identified a new morphogenetic factor widely conserved in bacteria. The protein, RodZ, is required for assembly of the actin cytoskeleton MreB that controls cell wall synthesis and cell shape. It is not yet understood how bacteria determine their shape.
Determination of bacterial rod shape by a novel cytoskeletal …
2008年11月13日 · RodZ is a membrane protein with bitopic topology such that the N‐terminal region including a helix‐turn‐helix motif is in the cytoplasm, whereas the C‐terminal region is exposed in the periplasm. GFP–RodZ forms spirals along the lateral axis of the cell beneath the cell membrane, similar to the MreB bacterial actin.

2010年8月1日 · RodZ (YfgA) is a membrane protein well conserved among bacterial species and important in the determination of cell shape and motility, although the molecular mechanism involved is not well established. We have characterized a Δ rodZ mutant and show that defective peptidoglycan synthesis might be the primary effect of the deletion.
