CAAC Flight 5109 was a flight from Shanghai to Beijing with stops in Nanjing and Jinan. On January 18, 1985, the flight was operated by an An-24B with registration number B-434. The aircraft stalled and crashed during the approach to Jinan Airport due to improper handling by the flight crew during a go-around.

The Antonov An-24 (Russian/Ukrainian: Антонов Ан-24) (NATO reporting name: Coke) is a 44-seat twin turboprop transport/passenger aircraft designed in 1957 in the Soviet Union by the Antonov Design Bureau [1] and manufactured by the Kyiv, Irkutsk and Ulan-Ude Aviation Factories. It was the first of a future family of turboprops by Antonov.

The An-24 was powered by twin Ivchenko AI-24 turboprops, driving four-bladed constant-speed reversible props. Early production aircraft had AI-24 Series I engines providing 1,790 kW (2,400 EHP) take-off power each, while later machines went to AI-24 Series II engines with 1,900 kW (2,550 EHP) each.

The Chinese variant is comparable with the An-24RV and is fitted with a booster jet engine. Most aircraft built in China went to the military forces, but some were built for civil use by the CAAC (Civil Aviation Administration of China). The Chinese also redesigned the An-24 as Xi'an Y-7 and developed several own versions.

The An-24 is the original aircraft in a prolific and highly successful family of twin turboprop civil and military transports. The An-24 first flew in April 1960 with first production versions entering Aeroflot service in September 1963.
