The fifth-generation CBR900RR, or CBR929RR in North America, was introduced in 2000. It has a completely new 929 cc (56.7 cu in) engine, more oversquare with lighter internals. The engine also featured fuel injection and larger valves set at a narrower angle.

The CBR 929 RR is completely new. A new liquid cooled DOHC fuel injected 929cc inline-four which pumps out 20% more horse power (up to a claimed 160bhp) and 12% more torque.
