The CDA wagon was a type of hopper railway wagon used by British Rail, and then the privatised railway, to move china clay (kaolin) in South West England. The CDA was based on the same design as the HAA wagons which were used to transport coal, with the prototype CDA being a conversion of the HAA type.

Built at BREL Doncaster, these were the first MGR-pattern wagons built since 1982, and a revised TOPS code of CDA (CDA-R) was allocated. The prototype was recoded CDA with design code CD001A, while the new-build batch were assigned CD002A.

This new batch of the popular CDA china clay hoppers focussing on their original introduction in 1987 and into the early privatisation era when they were used by EWS and DB Cargo.

2023年8月12日 · This week saw the last use of CDA four-wheel wagons on the local china clay traffic. They replaced the old 'Clay Hoods' 35 years ago! All have now been placed in store in St Blazey yard.

Based upon the HAA wagon design, CDA wagons featuring a flexible hopper covering to protect the clay from the rain were introduced in 1987 carrying the livery of English China Clays, although more recently they have been repainted in EWS colours. In August 2023 DB Cargo retired the last of the former BR/ECC china clay CDA hoppers after a service life of 35 years. These unique and distinctive wagons will be missed by enthusiasts but thanks to PECO, modellers can keep their legacy going in model form!
