The following table includes the 100-year time horizon global warming potentials (GWP) relative to CO2. This table is adapted from the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report, 2014 (AR5)i.

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) are fully or partly halogenated hydrocarbons that contain carbon (C), hydrogen (H), chlorine (Cl), and fluorine (F), produced as volatile derivatives of methane, ethane, and propane. The most common example is dichlorodifluoromethane (R-12).

Tetrafluoromethane, also known as carbon tetrafluoride or R-14, is the simplest perfluorocarbon (C F 4). As its IUPAC name indicates, tetrafluoromethane is the perfluorinated counterpart to the hydrocarbon methane. It can also be classified as a haloalkane or halomethane.

Incorporation of the updated IPCC recommended equations (as in the 2022 AGGI) and use of effective radiative forcing in the 2023 AGGI leads to decreased forcing for CH 4 (by 5%), and increases in forcing for CO 2 (by 5%), N 2 O (by 7%), CFC-11 (by 13%), and CFC-12 (by 12%).

Atmospheric CH4 reached 257% of the pre-industrial level (approximately 722 ppb) due to increased emissions from anthropogenic sources. Globally averaged CH4 calculated from in situ observations reached a new high of 1859 ± 2 ppb in 2017, an increase of 7 ppb with respect to the previous year (Figure 5).
