GCFX/Alstom 6000 Series units have been assigned by CN to the WC to replace retired SD45's. The SD40 puts out 3000 HP, has six-wheel C-C trucks, and has a top speed of about 65 miles per hour (105 km per hour). CN placed it’s first order in September 1967 and after the 5th order in December 1971 had 241 units which was more than any other railway.

The EMD SD40 is an American 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between January 1966 and August 1972. 1,268 locomotives were built between 1966 and 1972. In 1972, an improved version with new electronics was developed and marketed as a new locomotive, the SD40-2.

The EMD SD40-2 is a 3,000-horsepower (2,200 kW) C-C diesel–electric locomotive built by EMD from 1972 to 1989. The SD40-2 was introduced in January 1972 as part of EMD's Dash 2 series, competing against the GE U30C.

According to its Blue Card CN SD40-2 5351 has been stored for over a year (from 4/25/09 until 9/25/10). This unit is currently used on the former FRVR/Milw Rd pair of isolated branch lines on the Northwest of Metro Milwaukee, served by CN job L507.
