The compound 2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile (also called o-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile; chemical formula: C 10 H 5 ClN 2), a cyanocarbon, is the defining component of the lachrymatory agent commonly referred to as CS gas, a tear gas which is used as a riot control agent, and is banned for use in warfare due to the 1925 Geneva Protocol.

Tear gas works by irritating mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, mouth and lungs. It causes crying, coughing, difficulty breathing, pain in the eyes, and temporary blindness. With CS gas, symptoms of irritation typically appear after 20 to 60 seconds of exposure [3] and commonly resolve within 30 minutes of leaving (or being removed from) the area.

CS gas has no detectable odor but has been described as R earthy" and is grey/ off—white in color. Both CS and CN gas can contain dye additives but generally CÑ is more noted for having dye agents.
