In short, CSX needs FEC to reach customers in southeast FL because CSX itself has, to some extent, pulled out of the West Palm Beach-Miami market. CSX has not run an intermodal train south of Tampa for years.

2010年10月18日 · The FEC Bridge at Jacksonville is the only outlet/interchange at the north end of the FEC. Interchange takes place with both CSX and NS over this bridge with crews and engines of all three railroads using this bridge. The NS actually has crews who tie up and report at the FEC Bowden Yard in Jacksonville.

A new Northwood connection south of the existing one would provide a direct southwest-to-northeast connection between the South Florida Rail and FEC corridors, and enable Tri-Rail trains to cut...

The FEC route does have a 50-60 mile advantage over the CSX route, but with the planned improvements on the ex-SCL and the double-tracking of Tri-Rail perhaps the NS can successfully argue that CSX will no longer be at a huge disadvantage on home rails to Miami (and thus remove an argument that the FEC has to remain independent to serve both RR's.)
