The EMD SD40-2 is a 3,000-horsepower (2,200 kW) C-C diesel–electric locomotive built by EMD from 1972 to 1989. The SD40-2 was introduced in January 1972 as part of EMD's Dash 2 series, competing against the GE U30C.

A “new” locomotive on display at the C&O Railway Heritage Center in Clifton Forge, Va., is officially designated C&O SD40 #7534. But this particular locomotive is much more than a number.

2017年2月1日 · ATLANTA – CSX Transportation is the latest Class I railroad to take possession of six-axle ‘Eco’ locomotives for use in local and yard service. Progress Rail recently rebuilt 13 former CSX EMD SD40-2 locomotives into a new locomotive class known as SD40E3s at its Muncie, Ind., facility.

On the topic of performance, notable is that the improvements will yield rejuvenated 3,000-horsepower, six-axle locomotives for the fleet. The tractive power will increase from 86,000 to about 130,000 pounds, making it capable of doing the work of more modern, high-horsepower units in all types of freight service including intermodal and coal.

It became SBD 8050 in January 1983 and later CSX 8050, Class SD40-2, in April 1986. It was retired. 8056, Class SD40-2, was built in September 1979, #786208-17, FN 786208-17, as SCL 8056.

The EMD (Electro Motive Division) SD40 is a type of six-axle, 16-cylinder, 3,000hp diesel locomotive built from 1966 to 1972 (though first introduced in 1964). It is the predecessor or precursor to the SD40-2, and the initial successor to the SD35.

2007年7月1日 · The SD40-2 is the quintessential American diesel-electric locomotive. The fact they’re still in mainline use, when the newest one is over 21, is a testament to their enduring quality. Unfortunately, it’s likely to be an economic decision to park many of these fine machines, due to fuel economy and whatnot.
