The Aviation Traders ATL-98 Carvair is a retired large transport aircraft powered by four radial engines. It was a Douglas DC-4 -based air ferry conversion developed by Freddie Laker 's Aviation Traders (Engineering) Limited (ATL), with a capacity generally of 22 passengers in a rear cabin, and five cars loaded in at the front.

Although its external appearance is quite different, the Carvair was a conversion of the Douglas DC-4 airliner or military C-54 Skymaster, large numbers of which were available after WW2. Airframe from the wings rearward was a standard DC-4, except for a lengthened vertical tail for enhanced controllability.

2024年4月20日 · The Carvair – abbreviated from the phrase ‘car-via air’ – was the brainchild of the British aviation entrepreneur Sir Freddie Laker, who later established one of the world’s first low-cost airlines, Laker Airways Skytrain. During the war years of 1941-46, Laker flew as a pilot for the Air Transport Auxiliary.

Aviation Traders developed the Carvair in response to Channel Air Bridge's requirement for an air ferry capable of transporting passengers and their cars between the United Kingdom and continental Europe.

The ATL-98 Carvair (Car-Via-Air!) could carry five cars instead of three, also taking into account the larger sizes of newer cars. Operators could reconfigure it quickly, to carry fewer cars and more passengers, if they wanted. With no cars, it could still carry 85 passengers.

The unique Aviation Traders Carvair design emerged in the 1950s when Air Charter Ltd of Southend in the UK began to look for a replacement for its aging Bristol Freighters to use on its cross-Channel car transportation routes.
