On the outskirts of the Roman Empire, in 117 AD Scotland, the brave Centurion, Quintus Dias, heads north along with the dauntless General, Titus Virilus, and a small detachment of the Ninth Legion, after seeing his distant outpost being wiped out.

Centurion is not your typical Gladiator-style epic offering, but is more or less a chase film in the vein of a traditional slasher film with an unrelenting force stalking its frantic prey. The threat exists in the form of The Picts, a Scottish tribe bent on repelling their Roman invaders.

Many of the battles are intense. The main characters spend most of the movie either fighting or being chased.

Centurion's depiction of the massacre of the Roman Ninth Legion is modelled on the historical Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9AD, in which a German mercenary supposedly loyal to Rome led three legions of Publius Quinctilius Varus along a narrow pathway in the German forest, where terrain blocked their escape and they were ambushed by Germans ...

Centurion delivers some large-scale action but plays almost like a Roman-era Western in its depiction of a few soldiers trying to get home alive after the slaughter of their comrades.
