Chela is a genus of small danionin freshwater fish from South Asia that are closely related to Laubuka. [1]

The silver hatchet chela (Chela cachius) is a danionin fish in the family Danionidae. Endemic in South Asia, it is found in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Myanmar. [3]

Freshwater; brackish; benthopelagic; pH range: 6.8 - 7.5; dH range: 6 - 12. Tropical; 22°C - 26°C (Ref. 12468) Asia: Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Inhabits ponds, ditches and rivers in plains and submontane regions (Ref. 41236). Breeds freely in ponds, tanks and small streams. Utilized also as larvicidal fish (Ref. 4832).

Chela: from a local vernacular name for the fish. cachius: from Kachhi a Bengali vernacular name for this species. Order: Cypriniformes Family: Cyprinidae. Widespread in Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar although the majority of records are from the Ganges and Brahmaputra river systems in northern India, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

Laubuka fasciata is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to family Danionidae. This species is endemic to river systems in Kerala, India. [2] [3] It is known as Malabar Hatchet Chela. [4] The fish was first discovered in 1958 in the Anamalai streams by the Keralite fish scientist Eric Godwin Silas. [5]

Body color translucent, shining brilliant silver. Light olive on back and whitish below. A greenish longitudinal band from level of dorsal fin. Fins are yellowish. Maximum lengths: 5 cm (Rahman 1989 and 2005), 6 cm (Talwar and Jhingran 1991) and 12 cm (Shafi and Quddus 2001).
