ECT may be indicated as well in specific pediatric neurological conditions. Multiple published reports demonstrate the safety and efficacy of ECT in pediatric patients with a wide range of psychopathology. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains one of the most regulated treatments in medicine. 1 Despite the work of national medical organizations, the process to undergo ECT can differ substantially from one state to another.

Seven states require a court order to perform ECT on minors. Nine states have absolute restrictions below a certain age. Most of these states restrict below the age of 12, 14, or 16 years; however, West Virginia restricts anyone under the age of 18 from receiving ECT. There are 12 states with no defined laws on ECT in children.
