C&NW 5525, as NYC 3036, was the first production GP40 using EMD's new 645 engine. Equipped with Automatic Train Control and Automatic Train Stop. Equipped with dynamic braking.

The GP40 was a versatile locomotive that could be found across the US hauling drag freights over mountain passes and leading high-speed intermodal trains across flat terrain. Three rooftop radiator fans at the rear of the long hood differentiate a GP40 from its lower horsepower counterpart, the GP38, which has two fans at this location.

CNW GP40 #5500 looks like it was in for some overhaul. Unfortunately, the handwritten sign is not legible in the photo. The loco was built by EMD as NYC #3010 in November of 1965.

CNW GP40 #5537 - Chicago & North Western : Description: Built by EMD in December of 1965 as NYC #3049, it went to PC #3049 and CR 3049 before landing as CNW 5537. When Conrail disposed of some of their GP40's after their 15 year lease was up in 1980, the C&NW leased them that very same year before purchasing them outright through Precision National in 1981. The units were rebuilt at the Oelwein shops complete with the nose bell even!

CNW GP40 #5517 - was built in December 1965. The unit currently operates under this number, and is scheduled to be renumbered to Union Pacific 701. The CNW 5517 is seen in San Antonio, Texas in March 2000. - Jay Glenewinkel Photo
