Viral Transport Media (VTM) are suitable for collection, transport, maintenance, and long-term freeze storage of clinical specimens containing viruses, chlamydia, mycoplasma, or ureaplasma organisms. It maintains organism viability for 48 hours at room or refrigerated temperature.

Viral transport media with beads is preferable for collection of specimens requiring VTM. Culturettes containing ampoules of viral transport medium are preferred for rectal swabs and stool swabs. Specimens for influenza, mumps, measles (rubeola), or VZV testing should be collected as soon as possible (within 3 days) of symptom onset.
