Dwijendralal Ray (19 July 1863 – 17 May 1913), also known as D. L. Ray, was a Bengali poet, playwright, and musician. D.L. Roy’s classic drama “Shah Jahan” provides ample testimony to prove that power and wealth should not be the principal criteria for an empire to survive. The certainty for survival lies in love, freedom and dignity of human being, which never prevail in an autocratic system.

He served the government until 28 th April 1909 . During his service he made notable contributions to the Land & Revenue system of Bengal. D.L Roy is remembered for his historic 7 patriotic plays like, Shahjahan (1909), Mebarpatan (1908), Chandragupta (1911), and social sataires like Biraha (1897), Hasir Gaan (1900).

Subrata Das took a different view for his English translation and adaptation of D L Roy’s Shah Jahan. The play is an epic tale of the Murghal emperor (the one who created the Taj Mahal in memory of his wife) and the power struggle with his sons.
