2005年1月23日 · Imitating the successful Israeli practice of mounting a modern gun on an obsolete tank chassis, the Syrians with Czechoslovak assistance mated the excellent Soviet 122mm D-30 field gun/howitzer to the T-34/85 tank chassis (Czech version). The T-34/85, while obsolete as a tank, was more then adequate as a SP mount.

The T-34/D30 122 mm Syrian Self Propelled Howitzer was a Syrian self propelled gun (SPG) conversion of the T-34 tank, armed with a 122 mm D-30 howitzer on the front of the upper hull. Built from surplus stocks of the T-34, the T-34/D30 was first used against Israel in the 1973 during the Yom Kippur War.

The D-30 was also used as a SPG mounting by Egypt with the gun mounted on a modified T-34 chassis as well as being housed in a large turret for added crew protection. The D-30 had a longer 38 calibre barrel than the M-30 resulting in greater range and also used a unusual tripod mounting that allowed full 360 degree traverse.
