The Air Launch Aerial-Intercept Guided Missile (AIM)-9 series Sidewinder Missile is a short-range, air-to-air missile, whose mission is to detect, home-in, intercept, and destroy enemy aircraft.

The AIM-9M is a development of the AIM-9L and replaced the latter on the production line. It features a reduced-smoke rocket motor, an improved guidance section designated WGU-4/B, better countermeasures resistance (IRCCM - Infrared Counter-Countermeasures), and improved overall reliability.

It features a lightweight, compact design with cruciform canards and tail fins. It uses a solid rocket motor for propulsion, similar to most conventional missiles, a continuous-rod fragmentation warhead, and an infrared seeker. [8] The seeker tracks a difference in temperatures detected and uses proportional guidance to achieve impact.

Existing DATM-9M-1 and DATM-9M-2 will be used to support the training of USN and United States Marine Corps (USMC) ground maintenance technicians in assembly, disassembly, loading, transportation, and stowage procedures and techniques for the Sidewinder AIM9M and AIM-9M-8.
