In the audience there was painter and jazz drummer David Getz, who soon replaced Jones. Big Brother went on to become the house band at the Avalon Ballroom, [6] playing a progressive style of instrumental rock.

I was born in 1940 and grew up in Brooklyn. I studied at Cooper Union in NYC, Skowhegan in Maine and got an MFA at San Francisco Art Institute in 1964. I won a Fulbright Fellowship and lived in Crakow, Poland for a year. I taught painting at the SFAI from 1965 to 1966.

David Getz was born January 24, 1940 and raised in Brooklyn N.Y. As a child he showed an exceptional talent in both music and art. His first passions, starting somewhere in early adolescence, were drawing and copying comic book art and studying Native American culture.

One of those who were there to watch it all happen from start to finish was the Big Brother drummer, Dave Getz. I recently interviewed Dave to discuss his new CD, Can't Be the Only One (see here). The album title comes from a song that Janis wrote the lyrics to (but never recorded) when she heard Dave and the band jamming in a rehearsal studio.
