5.5: Classification of Sedimentary Rocks - Geosciences LibreTexts
2024年4月11日 · Clastic (or detrital) rock is classified and named based on the size and composition of the clasts. Their various sizes, from boulders to clay, is referred to as the sediment grain size. The classification and description of the various clastic rocks appears in the top section of the chart below.
Detrital vs. Chemical Sedimentary Rocks | Differences & Formation
2023年11月21日 · Three examples of detrital sedimentary rock are shale, sandstone, and conglomerate. All three of these rocks are made of eroded fragments of other rocks that have been...
5.3: Sedimentary Rocks - Geosciences LibreTexts
Detrital or clastic sedimentary rocks consist of preexisting sediment pieces that come from weathered bedrock. Most of this is mechanically weathered sediment, although some clasts may be pieces of chemical rocks.
Detritus (geology) - Wikipedia
Detrital particles can consist of lithic fragments (particles of recognisable rock), or of monomineralic fragments (mineral grains). These particles are often transported through sedimentary processes into depositional systems such as riverbeds, lakes or the ocean, forming sedimentary successions.
Rocks 2.4 - Radford University
Sedimentary rocks can form from grains of pre-existing rocks (detritus), from chemical processes, or from organic processes. Detrital sedimentary rocks form from detritus, the rock and mineral fragments that are transported by gravity, water, ice, or wind. Detrital sediments are classified by grain size. Detritus is classified by its grain size.
Sedimentary rock | Definition, Formation, Examples,
2025年2月25日 · Sedimentary rocks are the lithified equivalents of sediments. They typically are produced by cementing, compacting, and otherwise solidifying preexisting unconsolidated sediments. Some varieties of sedimentary rock, however, are precipitated directly into their solid sedimentary form and exhibit no intervening existence as sediment. Organic ...
Sedimentary Rocks - Definition, Formation, Types, & Examples
2023年2月17日 · Sedimentary rocks develop in beds or strata that are layers of rocks with a uniform lithology and texture. Common sedimentary rock structures include bedding, ripple marks, fossil tracks and trails, and mud cracks.
SEDIMENT AND SEDIMENTARY ROCKS - Queensborough Community College
TYPES OF DETRITAL SEDIMENTARY ROCKS. CONGLOMERATE - forms from cemented GRAVEL (a mixture of cobbles, pebbles, and coarse sand), such as from a stream gravel bar. The gravel particles are "rounded" by erosion processes. BRECCIA - forms from cemented "gravel-sized" fragments of rock, but the rock fragments are very "angular" in shape.
What are examples of detrital sedimentary rock?
2021年2月5日 · Detrital sedimentary rocks are mainly classified by the size of their grain. The largest grain is a boulder, followed by a cobble, a pebble, sand, silt and finally the finest grain, which is clay. These grains of sediments are what get cemented together to …
