The British Rail Class 08 is a class of diesel–electric shunting locomotives built by British Railways (BR). As the standard BR general-purpose diesel shunter, the class became a familiar sight at major stations and freight yards.

A large number of Class 08 were obtained for Preservation by Heritage Railways. Many were also retained for use on Network Rail Lines, and these are shown with their normal location or storage.

Power was provided by a six-cylinder from English Electric via two electric traction motors and coupling rods. 996 units were built in about ten years, making the class 08 the most-built British diesel locomotive. The classes 09, 10 and 13 were also created on this basis.

Around 1990, this was the first diesel I was passed to drive and was very handy for shunting early in the morning when the 'steamers' were still 'brewing-up'. Built: BR 1958-1962.
