Good antenatal care (ANC) is important in the development of the unborn and links the woman and her family with the formal health system. Inadequate care during the antenatal period breaks the continuum of care which can compromise health of both mothers and newborns.

Antenatal care (ANC) coverage is an indicator of access and use of health care during pregnancy. The antenatal period presents opportunities for reaching pregnant women with interventions that may be vital to their health and wellbeing and that of their infants.

Antenatal care coverage (at least one visit) is the percentage of women aged 15 to 49 with a live birth in a given time period that received antenatal care provided by skilled health personnel (doctor, nurse or midwife) at least once during pregnancy.
