Two hundred years of evolution have altered the paddle, but not beyond recognition. Don Meany started making paddles with his brother Joe in 1964 in the basement of the Rockton Hotel in Atikokan. Don began making paddles because he was active in canoe racing and thought he could make paddles that were better for racing than what was available.

Don grew up in Kirkland Lake. He has been in the military, underground diamond drilling at Steep Rock, worked at Caland and now puts his considerable energies into paddle-making and promoting Atikokan and region at every chance he gets. His paddles have gone around the world. His marketing plan is word-of-mouth, and it works very well.
