Dust 514 didn’t fail, it’s just that it was tied to PS3 which became an old console over time. Actually ps3 was already nearing end of life on release. CCP afaik made a profit with Dust

Dust 514 was an amazing games because of these 3 things. It had amazing Clan/Corp System with amazing in game assignable rolechat channel abilities. The ability to buy different gear and make you fighter your own with the different gear selection and the ability to buy better gear.

I get to jump around with triple myofibrils and a flaylock in each weapon slot, I get to run around with a nova knife primary and slash up unwitting foes, I get to speed tank a minmatar heavy and zip around with an HMG laying waste to all that I can catch, and that's only a tiny bit of the things I do or have tried.

Dust 514 had a ton of legit reasoning for why they put it on console: It's highly suspected that sony subsidized CCP's licensing of the unreal engine Sony shouldered a lot of the burden of distribution and helped with advertising (much like putting things on steam) - It still shows at the very top of PSN's free to play section.
