Deze heeft er 178, te weten 98 van het type vierwagentreinstel (VIRM-IV), en 80 van het type zeswagentreinstel (VIRM-VI). De eerste serie (VIRM-1) is ontstaan door verlenging van de DD-IRM, het Dubbeldeksinterregiomaterieel.

2022年9月16日 · The ViRM project is the first major contract for ETCS retrofitting of rolling stock in the Netherlands. It is part of a comprehensive Dutch programme to retrofit the existing rolling stock fleet with state-of-the-art train control technology.

The first series (81 train sets) are being fully modernised in 2016 – 2020 with upper zones that are ideal for work and quiet. The lower zones are more suitable for socialising.

2022年3月1日 · NETHERLANDS Railways (NS) has announced it will modernise 51 four-car VIRM 4 double deck EMUs, which were delivered from 2008 onwards, at a cost of €323m. The upgrade of the first prototype vehicle will start in autumn 2023 and be completed at the end of 2025, with the remaining 50 sets to be completed between 2026 and 2028.

VIRM staat voor Verlengd Interregiomaterieel. Deze naam ontstond toen vanaf 2000 het oorspronkelijke DD-IRM met nieuwe tussenrijtuigen verlengd werd. Het eerste DD-IRM treinstel (de 8201) werd op 21 april 1994 overgebracht naar de werkplaats in Leidschendam.

VIRM stands for Verlengd InterRegio Materieel, or Lengthened InterCity Cars. The name stems from the first batch, which were rebuilt from DD-IRM, or DubbelDeks InterRegio Materieel class cars. Those, built in 1994-1996, were originally built as three- and four-car sets.
