The ECL86 was one of the last triode plus output pentode valves designed and was released to the market in 1962. Uses were in domestic radio and audio equipment. Normally in single ended output stages for radio-grams and tape recorders. The design proved popular in low cost stereo systems. The ECL86 was preceded by the ECL82.

Common type Europe tube/semicond. Triode+Beam-Output-Tetrode. With only 12% space volume, 70% heater power and 4 to 3.8 watts output power against the ECL11, the ECL86 represents the final perfection of this kind of tubes. Those AF-multiple-tubes were asked for again, as FM-detectors became fitted with Ge-diodes, making the EABC80 obsolete.

Only one ECL86 is used in each channel of the three-watt stereophonic amplifier described in this section. The design is therefore very economical, but even so, a reasonably good quality of reproduction is achieved. Bass-boost and treble-cut tone controls are provided.
