In an effort to increase sales, EMD offered a final version, the turbocharged GP15T. This model featured an eight cylinder 645E3C that offered the same horsepower as its predecessors but was more fuel efficient. It's only noticeable external differences included the exhaust silencer on the roof and larger radiator air intakes.

The EMD GP15D was the product of a unique partnership between EMD and Caterpillar. All of these locomotives were built by Motive Power Industries. The GP20D used Kato generators and CAT 3516 prime movers, the prime movers were branded under EMD as the 12-170B15-T1.
