The second SD40X model from EMD was a prototype to the EMD SD50. Only four were built and these were sold to Kansas City Southern as KCS 700-703. UP's eight SD40X locomotives were EMD "testbeds" for the new SD40 series. The eight units were powered by 645 prime movers and were numbered UP 3040-3047. On November 6, 1977, UP 3045, 3092, and 3074 head up a Utah Railway eastbound coal empty through the signal bridge ABS 6990E at Ironto

EMD #434A-434F all had flared radiators and became UP 3040-3045, though sadly none of these exist today. Regardless of flat or flared radiators, all of these SD40X test/demo units were built on SD35 underframes, giving them a short and stubby appearance.

The most unique of the 14 SD40-3 rebuilds rostered by the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway is the 3046. This unit was originally built by EMD as one of nine SD40X locomotives, which were demonstrators for the EMD SD40 model. Unlike the production SD40's which had an overall length of 65' 8"
