The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is the most inclusive intergovernmental platform in the Asia-Pacific region. The Commission promotes cooperation among its 53 member States and 9 associate members in pursuit of solutions to sustainable development challenges.

ESCAP serves as the United Nations’ regional hub promoting cooperation among countries to achieve inclusive and sustainable development. It is the largest regional intergovernmental platform with 53 Member States and 9 associate members.

The analysis utilizes cross-nationally comparable data from ESCAP database for the global SDGs indicator framework and when necessary supplementary statistics available at the regional and sub-regional levels.

By 1976, ECAFE had already moved to its current headquarters in Bangkok, changed its name to the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) to reflect the diversity of its membership, and increased scope of work.

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific is the main legislative organ of ESCAP and reports to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It provides a forum for all governments of the region to review and discuss economic and social issues and to strengthen regional cooperation.

The seventy-seventh session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will be held virtually from 26 to 29 April 2021 under the theme, “Building back better from crises through regional cooperation in Asia and the Pacific.”
