The B-57 Canberra is the first jet bomber in U.S. service to drop bombs during combat. B-57s were sent to Vietnam in 1965 and used for daylight bombing, night interdiction, and reconnaissance missions. The National Guard operated EB-57s until 1982.

After the retirement of the RB-57A from firstline service, 24 of them were fitted up as electronic warfare training aircraft and redesignated "EB-57A". Jamming gear and generators were fitted in the bomb bay, chaff dispensers were fitted on underwing pylons, and antennas littered the aircraft.

In the early 1950s the U.S. Air Force identified a need for a jet-powered medium bomber to quickly replace the aging, propeller-driven Douglas B-26 Invader. Thus, in March of 1951, the Air Force contracted with the Glenn Martin Company to build the British Canberra in the United States under license.
