The fortified Islamic town of Qasr ad-Dakhla or el-Qasr (Arabic: قصر الداخلة, the Fortress) was built in the 12th century on the remains of a Roman fort in the NW of the Dakhla Oasis by the Ayyubid kings.

With a spiky mosque tower and old mud-walled homes amid narrow alleys, backdropped with palms, dunes and desert cliffs, yeah, El Qasr is a real fairytale oasis amid the 21st century. It’s also one of the oldest-inhabited areas of Egypt’s Western Desert (which is really part of the Greater Sahara).

El-Qasr is a small village in El-Dakhla Oasis. The village itself is an interesting place to visit since no big change has been made to it since the ancient times.
