The score takes into account the presence of esophageal edema and strictures and the presence and severity of exudates, rings, and furrows.

EREFS is a gold standard for endoscopic examination in patients with EoE. EoEHSS is the most reliable histologic system for the evaluation of biopsies with EoE. The Multidisciplinary Severity Index for Eosinophilic Esophagitis (I-SEE) is promising but needs further validation.
