The FA-1/FB-1, which featured a 1,500 horsepower (1,100 kW) rating, was built from January 1946 to October 1950, with a 1,600 hp (1,200 kW) version produced between March and August 1950 (many early models were subsequently upgraded to 1,600 hp).

The Alco FA series cab locomotives were purchased by the Erie freight service. These units started with the 1500 hp FA-1 and went up to the 1600hp FA-2 units. In an article from Railroad Magazine send by Matt Klemchalk, the Erie diesel freight were given classifications series similar to that of the steam locomotives.

The FA, sporting a beefier carbody than EMD's ubiquitous designs, was introduced in 1946 and initially offered 1,500 horsepower with a B-B wheel arrangement.

Over 600 400 of them being FA’s were built from 1946 to 1956. Many of these saw service after being sold from their original purchaser. The Atlas FA and FB-1 will capture that rugged look of a road train fighting up a hill with a large assortment of tonnage behind it.
