ESA - Remote Terminal Units
The Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) is a unit that is usually present on medium-large size spacecraft. The RTU offloads the On Board Computer from analogue and discrete digital data acquisition and actuators control tasks and it represents an example of implementation of distributed control system on board a satellite.
Modular RTU is one of the key avionics building blocks as the provided functionality is required by the majority of ESA missions. RTU has been design to configure the unit easily for any kind of missions with a low NREC cost and high TRL category.

Modular General Purpose RTU supporting advanced low speed …
The objective of this activity is to design, develop and qualify (EQM level) a Modular RTU. The SAVOIR/SAG identified the modular RTU as a high priority building block. This is one of the key avionics building blocks as the provided functionality is required by the majority of ESA missions. An EQM has been developed and validated.
The Modular RTU development includes the following key characteristics: ∙ Conceived as an assembly of different modules/slices with standardized mechanical and internal electrical interfaces than can be used across different missions ∙ Interfaces compliant with the ECSS and CCSDS standards ∙ Use of digital interfaces for interconnection ...

ESA - Command and control - European Space Agency
The PMC controls all PLM equipment and instruments via an ESA standard On Board Data Handling (OBDH) bus. PLM equipment is controlled via: non-intelligent CBSs for power units an RTU for control of the other PLM equipment Intelligent Control Units (ICUs) for de-centralised instrument control
De-risk assessment: Pico-RTU system - preliminary design activity
The picoRTU system is an independent interoperable RTU system, that follows standardized way of communication via remote terminal interface, while providing high modularity on system level.
SAVOIR - European Space Agency
The functions are grouped and elaborated into a set of generic functional requirements. The grouping has been done according to current practices, but does not constraints the physical implementation: generic On-Board Computer (OBC) specification generic Remote Terminal unit (RTU), or Data Concentrator, specification
