The Japanese weren't fools... they recognized how the matchlock worked and their uses for them were almost certainly different than in Europe.

European matchlock pistols are rare, and even when matchlock muskets were still in use, the corresponding pistols were usually snaphaunces or wheellocks. This pattern is of Central or Eastern European origins, probably German or Polish based on the style of the stock and the shape of the lockplate.

2017年5月13日 · The Matchlock mechanism was probably known in Europe since the 1430's or 1440's. Who exactly invented it is anyone's guess but it was first recorded to have been used in significant numbers in battle by the Hungarians in the 1440's.
