Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Nine (AIRTEVRON NINE, VX-9, nicknamed The Vampires) is a United States Navy air test and evaluation squadron based at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, California. Using the tail code XE, the squadron operates F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, EA-18G Growlers, and the F-35C Lightning II.

In June 1993, the CNO directed the consolidation of VX-4 and VX-5 into a single operational test and evaluation squadron designated as VX-9, with a permanent F-14 Detachment located at Point Mugu, California. This initiative was launched as part of the "right-sizing" of our Naval Forces in the aftermath of the Cold War.

On Nov. 6, 2002 this F-14 took off from Fallon Naval Air Station with a VIP in the back seat - a naval officer from the cruiser Anzio who was on what the military calls a "FAM Hop," or familiarization ride. In flight, when the pilot pulled a "negative 1g," the gravity force moved the officer nearly off his seat.

F-14D BuNo 164604 c/n 632 was the last Tomcat to be produced and was delivered to the USN on July 10, 1992 and assigned to the Test & Evaluation units VX-4 and VX-9 as Vandy 1. VX-9 “Vampires” was created when VX-4 and VX-5 merged. The first F-14 to wear the black livery was 159853 and 164604 was the last.
