Building on the failed XP-50 project, Grumman's F7F Tigercat took to the air in November 1943. The Navy was indeed interested. The sleek, narrow Tigercat was faster than any fighter then in service--including the Corsair--had plenty of range, and devastating armament: four 20mm cannons and four .50 caliber machine guns.
